WINTER PARK, Colorado — January 20, 2026 — In what will surely go down as one of the great moments in Australian sporting history, Michael Milton has done the near-impossible: the 52-year-old legend clinched qualification in the speed events for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Paralympic Winter Games, completing a full set of alpine disciplines he can now contest in Italy in March.
The day began with Milton lining up against an international field for the first of two Super G races. In the first race he tore down the course in 58.94 seconds to take first place ahead of runner-up Noah Bury (USA), with Martin Cupka (SVK) in third.
The victory was not only a win on the clock but a qualifier: in that moment, Milton achieved his long-standing goal to ski all three speed events – Downhill, Super-G and GS Combined. He has now met the criterai to compete across all five alpine skiing disciplines — Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, Downhill and Super Combined.
Coming to the US early for these races was definitely a gamble but it paid off. I feel like I can get my best results in the speed events so… bring it on!
In the second Super-G later the same day, Michael took second place in a time of 59.52 seconds, 1.22 seconds behind Bury. Canada’s Nicholas Tulk rounded out the podium in third.
The magnitude of his achievement can’t be overstated. Just five months ago, when he announced his comeback, even he thought qualifying in all five disciplines would be tough, especially given the short timeframe and the fact that he was ineligible for funding from Snow Australia. In interviews he spoke about chasing what he himself admitted could sound “crazy” — a return to elite racing nearly 20 years after his retirement, and after overcoming two cancer diagnoses and a major injury from a ski accident just last March.
That journey has been anything but smooth. Early in his Northern Hemisphere campaign, Milton’s hopes were threatened by an inability to secure ski racing insurance, a bizarre but very real barrier that sidelined him in Europe and forced him to search for alternatives just to compete.
But setbacks — including a crash in Europe that robbed him of a key Super-G qualifying opportunity — did nothing to dampen his resolve. Instead, Milton shifted focus, adjusted plans, and poured every ounce of experience and determination into every start.
With speed qualification now in hand, Milton isn’t finished yet. The racing continues this week with Giant Slalom on Wednesday, followed by Slalom on Thursday and Friday — events he has already qualified in, but crucial opportunities to sharpen his legs, hone his race rhythm against fierce competition, and improve his ranking ahead of the Paralympic Games.
For the man known as one of Australia’s greatest winter athletes, this isn’t just qualification — it’s vindication, celebration, and proof that sometimes the most improbable dreams are the ones worth chasing.
