A crash during training today is likely to have an impact on Michael’s performance in Super G races this weekend, perhaps hampering his chances to qualify.
Having completed a training run on the glacial course, Michael says he was rushing to catch the gondola to squeeze more runs into the session.
“I may have been distracted. I’d finished my run and just misread the signs. I skied off the edge of the groomed run, caught the lip and went flying into the glacier off the side. I landed on some deep, soft snow which basically sent me tumbling and I stopped another 30 metres down,” explained Michael.

“I was pretty disoriented and shaken up. It took me a while to work my way out of the snow. The officials were there pretty quick but I had no major injuries. My ski was broken and I had a sore leg and a sore arm.”
Luckily, his injuries do not require treatment, just rest. But, with just two days until his one-and-only chance to qualify for speed events, it seems unlikely he will be able to perform at his best. Plus, with no time to replace his brojen ski, he will be further hampered by a ski that is not long enough.
“I still plan to race. I’ll get as much rest as I can and just give it a shot.”
